Chiffchaffs Return

The past week has had us listening to the varied territorial songs of the birds in the woods comprising the Trust. One particular bird of recent note is the Chiffchaff. This is a small , rather non-descript warbler, but has a very distinct song, like its name sake.... chiff chaff!

This little bird , as a result of ringing data, has returned to our small woodland having overwintered in Southern Europe. Our first encounter was in April, 2021, as a mature male adult bird, so this chap is at least 3 years old. The males tend to return before the females to sing their hearts out to gain the attentions of the female. As one of our early return migrants it is a sign for us of the coming breeding Spring season.
