RSPB Garden Birdwatch

Like a lot of households, over half a million people, including the Trust, took part in Big Garden Birdwatch 2023, counting a whopping 9.1 million birds! House Sparrows took the top spot, but counts of these chirpy birds are down by 57% compared to the first Birdwatch in 1979. In fact, we’ve lost 38 million birds from UK skies in the last 60 years.

2023 Figures

With our bird feeding stations constantly filled and maintained it is not surprising that we have a fairly large number visiting them.

Top species for us are :

  1. Blue Tit

  2. Great Tit

  3. Coal Tit

  4. Gold Finch

  5. Tree Sparrow

  6. Chaffinch

Other noted species are Nuthatch, Gt Spotted Woodpecker, Robin, Long Tailed Tit, and Marsh Tit.

The data gained examines where we are regarding losses and gains.

With the RSPB and BTO we are able to use the information to dig deeper into climate and environmental changes.
